Exploring Archaeology in Peacehaven

Working with the Changing Chalk Partnership, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Lewes District Council, we led a project exploring archaeology in Peacehaven. One of the outcomes is a learning pack aimed at Primary Schools which can be accessed below and interpretation boards for the Big Park will be coming soon!

Learning Pack

This resource is designed to explore the stories uncovered during archaeological excavations in the area around the Big Park.

You can download a pdf of the pack here (including activities)

And a powerpoint presentation (with notes!) can be accessed here

Peacehaven Big Dig

In September and October 2024, through the Changing Chalk Partnership, we excavated an area of the Big Park in Peacehaven and residents were able to excavate archaeological test pits in their gardens. The report is currently being written but we discovered evidence of prehistoric field systems, worked flint, a few bits of prehistoric pottery and some interesting evidence of later marling (mixing chalk into the soil to improve the condition of the soil) telling us more about how Peacehaven developed as a Downland settlement.
